Develop one of the following choices into an essay of a minimum of 500 words. Support your comments with evidence from the text. Choices one through three should be written using the formal essay format. Remember that this format requires the third person point of view. The pronoun "I" should not appear.
1. The first person narrator has certain advantages and certain disadvantages. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having The Catcher in the Rye being told from the first person point of view of its main character Holden Caulfield. Refer to the novel, supporting your comments with textual references.
2. Select one of the many generalizations which Holden makes --- such as, "I hate actors. They never act like people. They just think they do" --- and write a defense or criticism of that generalization.
3. Choose two of the symbols in the novel and discuss their use, significance, and effectiveness.
4. Pretend you lived in the room next to Holden at one of the schools he attended. Write a letter home to your parents in which you discuss Holden. Be sure to elaborate on examples of his behavior so that your letter may be convincing.
5. Add another chapter to this novel. Perhaps you may let the reader see what does become of Holden Caulfield.
6. Check out the following list of books which have been banned in high schools. Choose from that list one of the novels you've studied and write an essay in defense of teaching the novel or in support of banning of the novel. Remember to support your argument with evidence from the work itself.
