Notice that, in the novel, Holden is telling us what happened to him and how he got where he is.  He interrupts his present to tell us about action that has already occurred. 

The same thing occurs in A Separate Peace.  When we meet Gene at the beginning of Chapter One, it is fifteen years after the incidents that took place at the Devon School had occurred.  The entire novel is a flashback to that time.
