There are three kinds of point of view:

1st person point of view - the "I" point of view as found in The Catcher in the Rye

3rd person limited point of view  - story is told through the eyes of a particular character who, therefore, can tell the reader only what he or she actually knows

3rd person omniscient point of view - story is told by a character who knows the past, the present, and the future, and  who knows what each character is thinking and feeling; in other words, a narrator that knows all, a narrator that is omniscient
