Lesson 4 ..." Time is of the essence"

When Tituba arrived from her native Barbados, one can only imagine the hardships that she and her contemporaries experienced as slaves. The time frame alone needed to navigate such a great  distance must have had tremendous implications in terms of food and overall health issues.

Assuming that Tituba was initially brought to the state of Virginia from her native Barbados as a young slave, this would mean that she would have been at sea a very long period of time. Traveling through the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, the boat carrying Tituba and the other slaves would need to travel approximately 1920 miles.

How long would it have taken to travel the 1920 miles, assuming the ship averages a speed of 8 miles per hour?

Lesson Five

Wet, cramped and unsanitary, life aboard a galleon was as much hardship as adventure. Confined living space, dubious food, wet clothes, and illness were a fact of every trans-Atlantic crossing.

Most ships engaged in sailing between the New World and Europe were "galleons." Although considered the most advanced ships of the time, they did not provide any creature comforts to make the voyage more endurable.

Today, the fire department establishes the legal limit as to how many people should be allowed in a group gathering. In other words, a given hall has a legal limit for events based on the area in square footage. Obviously, this situation would have been nonexistent on these crowded ships of its time or abused for the sake of greed.

Problem :

Assume that these "galleons" had sleeping quarters with a capacity of 4800 sq. ft. If each person should be afforded a comfortable sleeping area of 8 ft. by 4 ft. ( 32 sq ft.) ....

Estimate the maximum capacity for this space of 4800 sq. ft.
