Puritans were, first of all,
non-conformists with
the Anglican Church
of England and with the politics
and society of their times.

They arrived in the New World
espousing not only specific
religious beliefs, but also
with a vision for a new society
structured around
those beliefs.

Governor Winthrop, the first
governor of the Massachusetts
Bay Colony, expressed that vision
when he wrote: "For we
must consider that we are
lke a City upon a Hill;
the eyes of all people are on us."
