This story sent to me by William Corey
In the 1600's 4 Cory's came to RI. from England. Giles, William, John and LeMason. They
went their separate ways and, as you know, Giles moved to MA.
The story starts with Giles wanting to goto Salem to see the trials, which Martha thought was not a good idea-so she took his saddle and hid it. This really got to Giles and he walk to the trials.
When he got there he told his friends what she did and the 'friends' started to ask about other 'strange stuff a normal women wouldn't do'. he told them that she talks to herself before she goes to bed, etc.
She was rounded up for witchery. Giles -after he calmed down- realized what he had done and began to feel guilty so he told them that she was just saying her prayers ect. The powers that be figured that she put a 'spell' on him to change his story and figured him for a witch, also.
As we all know he was pressed to death. All the while he just said more weight when asked to confess, for if he did say yes he was, the sherif would have taken his land and his children would not be able to get it. (He had alot of land, too)
It took 3 days for him to die, just before he did he cursed the town and the sherif. Nowadays the local constables there have fallen ill via heart attacks etc.
That's the story I got from my mother, who got it from distant and close family at the Corey Family reunion. If you're wondering, it is believed I am descended from William Cory.
Thanks, William M.Corey (the original spelling was Cory, but due to a religious feud, the name was altered)
